Overview:

After seizing Schmidt, Company L defended the eastern portion from the Hasenfeld Road north while K Company defended the southern portion of the town west of the Hasenfeld Road. The Germans prepared for the attack during the night of 3-4 November. The Americans had failed to clear the "Hasenfeld Finger", and some German forces were able to move close to Schmidt undetected in the hours of darkness. Battalion III/860th Regiment was to attack on the axis of the Hasenfeld Road and seize the southeastern portion of Schmidt. Commanded by Captain Schindler, the battalion was a renamed Fortress Battalion, and had very limited experience. Just before daylight, German artillery pounded Schmidt. As the artillery fire shifted from south to north, the Germans attacked in its wake. Two 75mm guns supported III/860th.
