Overview:

The Mamayev Kurgan, a massive Tartar burial mound, was the centerpiece of Stalingrad. During the battle, the lines ebbed and flowed from the mound like an ocean tide. For the Germans, the mound provided a sight over the expanse of the Volga—a hollow victory for the Fuhrer’s ambitions. For the Soviets, it was a symbol not unlike the Reichstag—a place to raise a flag. Strewn with rubble, dotted with shell holes and riddled with trenches, Mamayev was the tomb for untold numbers of soldiers on both sides.
