Overview:
On March 3, 1945, the American 86th and 87th Infantry Regiments of the 10th Mountain Divi-sion captured many German strongholds along Hwy 64 as the Americans steadily advanced towards Bologna. But the fight for Iola by the 86th Regiment, Company E, would be costly as an entire platoon was lost. Among those killed was internationally-known skier, T. Sgt. Torger Tokle. Tokle’s death angered his fellow 10th soldiers to the point that it spurred their “take no prisoners” attitude and would fuel their attack on a German rear-guard near Sassomolare. The German rear-guard had laid mines and booby traps to slow the American advance, but had not reckoned on Americans bent on revenge.Attacker: American (87th Mountain Infantry Regiment)
