Overview:

In early January 1945, the Battle of the Bulge had run its course, and numerous Allied units were drawn northward to stem the German tide. Taking advantage of this situation, OKW launched a second, less well-known western front offensive codenamed Operation NORDWIND toward the Allied southern sector. The target was the French province of Alsace and the ambitious plan required two German armies to encircle the American Seventh Army in and around Sarrebourg. The northern portion of the German attack stalled. To break the impasse, the Germans deployed Panzer-Korps XXXIX, its key offensive weapon, along a more southern axis. Rebuffed at Oberroedern, it moved further southward and targeted the twin villages of Hatten-Rittershoffen. During the early morning of 9 January, the Germans managed to capture the Maginot fortifications located east of Hatten. Kompanie 3, Bataillon I, Panzergrenadier-Regiment 35 penetrated Hatten but was soon isolated from supporting units. A local counterattack by C Company, 242nd Infantry Regiment supported by a platoon of M18 Hellcats was laid on.

2025-09-27(A) Robert Wiebe vs American win

(VASL Log)
3 hrsWhat started with poor die rolls for the Americans proved to be a wall of lead by the end that the Germans could not withstand. Took all 6 turns, but after the Turn 6 American PFPh, all the German units, save a single 9-1 were broken, and would have been forced out of the VC buildings. One M18 was recalled, another under a stun effect, but otherwise ok, the the last just fine.

2024-06-09(D) Brian Lazewski vs Jeffrey Malter German win
2024-02-28(A) George Tashji vs German winUS was able to secure 2 VP buildings by Turn 2. Then the Germans counterattacked big on Turn 3, flaming one tank and recalling a second. Americans pressed on, securing a third VP building, but lost a CC to secure a fourth. Could not reach fifth or sixth in time. US needs to judiciously place smoke and WP from their mortars.
