Overview:

Control of the coastal road leading from Black Beach up to Topside was critical if water, ammunition and supplies were to reach the paratroopers fighting there. To make the road safe to travel, Colonel Jones ordered one company of his paratroopers to move down the road from the heights above, while one company of soldiers from the 34th Infantry Regiment moved up the road from the beach. After walking a short distance the paratroopers came under Japanese machine gun fire from caves on the hillside adjacent to the road.
