After Falaise, the battle of Normandy quickly transitioned into the battle of Western France. Maj. Gen Wyche’s veteran 79th Infantry Division crossed the Seine against little opposition. Generalfeldmarschall Model called for the standard response: an all-out counterattack against the bridgehead. Model had at his disposal only several weakened infantry formations that were barely intact or currently reforming, including the Leftwaffe troops of Generalleutnant Joachim von Tresckow’s Feld-Division 18. But he also had a power punch in the form of the King Tigers of schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503.

Round 1 of Roma 2022. I was the Germans and felt the scenario quite difficult, with any error meaning defeat. I tried to go for the buildings (as clearing the road seemed impossible) and managed to get close but by the last turn I could only take one less of the needed so I conceded. I destroyed the 4 American GMC and lost 1 Tiger, but on one of the open ground crossings a lucky American ROF broke five or six German squads (that were not stacked), making it quite impossible.

Very exciting game, really close with the Germans just failing to get the last building they needed for victory.
I made some mistakes with my (American) setup, mainly in placing the bazookas too far forward, so that they were captured when these outposts were eliminated. But I did better in keeping my main force back to defend the buildings next to the road, and in particular with my 'hit and run' tactics with the TDs: they ran round to the back of the King Tigers, took a bounding fire shot, then ran off, remaining in motion, The Germans made their main attack in the North, and the Tigers chose to tough it out in support of the infantry rather than turn and face my TDs. So I got one of them and was unlucky not to get another.
In fact both of the other Tigers managed to malf their MA, but they still remained a threat with their MGs and VBM-froze a couple of critical locations - managing to escape CCRF even with my 9-2 leader helping! But I then got lucky when I fired into a Melee, breaking all three German squads but not my lone American! This left the Germans needing desperate measures to take the last building, which they just failed to do.

Way too difficult for the Germans. Too large of an area to clear and too many powerful pieces for the Americans. I generally don't give up easily, but I called it before his tanks even arrived. I think if there were a few more turns to allow the Germans a non-frenetic attack it might be interesting, but as it is it's a waste of time.
