Overview:

The Allied invasion of Syria and Lebanon was conducted primarily by the 7th Australian Division, the 5th Indian Infantry Brigade and the brigade-strength Free French Division. A week later they were about ten miles south of Damascus but facing strong Vichy defenses. The veteran Indian brigade broke through to the city’s outskirts, only to find itself cut off and sorely pressed. On the right, the Free French seized all the steep, boulder-strewn Djebel el Kelb, save for Hill 740 which prevented them from coming to the Indians’ assistance. On the 20th, the Free French made another attempt to overcome this last barrier. . .

2021-02-09(D) Eben Johnson vs Vichy winLots of learning with this one: prisoners and VCs, hillside walls, wadis, etc.

Great fun. Vichy need to show serious sang froid.

Could have been tougher for the Vichy: 2 FF tanks on opposite hilltop did little the whole game.
2020-05-25(D) Paul Works vs Dan Best Vichy winDan set up to come over the hill mass and along the east (Board 29) flank. He needed several smoke rounds to help this attack. He did get two smokes, but then ran out, seriously impinging his movement. On his first move, one of my 25LLs immobilized a tank and my 8-1-directed MMG broke two Free French squads and a leader. On my half of Turn 1, my mortar (firing out of the smoke he placed on it), got a fortuitous hit that Shocked another of his tanks (which ended up destroyed at the top of Turn 2). After Dan's troops made some progress on Turn 2 to threaten my positions defending the VC building, my AT gun immobilized another tank (at first glance the 25LLs' small To Kill number is puny, but with a 3 ROF and +1 to Kill within six hexes, you can expect to get some kills/shocks/immob's) and he malf'd the main armament on his last tank. His 8-morale troops had trouble making MCs and I caught two squads and a leader with an 8-3 shot and rolled a "2" to KIA them all; ouch. We called it at that point. This scenario's record is now 18-18. Dan and I both believe it to favor the Vichy. The Free French need to get several turns of smoke - otherwise it will be difficult to get close enough to dig the Vichy out of their foxholes and sangers (and the stone buildings).
