Overview:

As part of 8th Army’s first attempt to crack the Enfidaville Line, the 5th New Zealand Brigade was ordered to capture the key observation point of Takrouna – a small village crowned by a group of tightly clustered buildings surrounded by cliffs, all atop a 600 ft. hill defended by troops of the 101st “Trieste” Motorized Division. The New Zealanders made a night attack to envelop the hill on both sides, but only on the eastern side did they gain much ground. There, after suffering heavy casualties from vicious defensive fire, elements of the 28th (Maori) Battalion reached the foot of the hill at dawn. The capture of Takrouna seemed impossible, but the Maoris regrouped and, with boundless determination, began working their way up the slopes of the rugged, heavily defended feature.

2024-12-08(D) Seumas Hoskins vs Dean Italian winBritish attempted a hill rush from North East corner but Italian positions on the ridges chewed through them.
2022-11-14(A) Owen Edwards vs Italian winHalf-mapper with the objective hex at the northern end, but this is a board-spanning game, because the Maoris have to find a viable approach route or two, and those may well include entry at the south-eastern end. In this game the Kiwis were basically a turn short due to the Cliffs round X1 - they could get adjacent but not Climb that turn. This might just sound like slow play, but was really the recovery from an early infiltration round the northern end by the Hero and 1.5 squads leading to that force being largely wiped out, taking only an HS and an SW with them. (That may have been a bad play of course, but was the result of a low odds combo of IFT and MC.)

The Maoris then focused on breaking up the central and southern Italian "ridge guards" , and developed a solid attacking position, slowly breaking more and more Italians, causing surrenders and flight. (The absolute casualties ended up in NZ favour, though the percentage ratio was worse.) The final decider was a pretty low odds Final Fire on a moving squad, leading to a KIA - a risk NZ needed to take at that point due to time running out. That was T7, and meant the final southern thrust was too slow (the northern thrust by this point consisting of a half-squad, albeit one ending up stealing Italian SWs and getting up to the Cliff).

Interesting, but a bit of a grind.
2022-07-31(A) nathan wegener vs Mark DeVries New Zealand winWent straight up the side which led to an Epic exchange of gunfire on the hill. Thanks to the dust and poorly made Italian equipment nothing happened several times. Kiwis slowly pushed back the Italians. 10-2 was a rally machine but didnt know how to fight and died in a equal odds CC counterattack. Lost a hero as well but eventually got the 9-1 and 2 squad+LMG in position. With a couple of good rolls broke 6 Italian squads to sieze the hill in turn 6.
