Day after day in mid-January, the Soviets launched repeated attacks against the Italians of the Cuneense, Julia, and Tridentina divisions. Often the attacks never even made it across the frozen Don River to the fortified positions. On January 16th, they tried again, striking the Tridentina Division. . .

Russian stayed out of italian LOS on turn 1 but were able to get an 8 hexes LOS with concealment units to an italian one, the 10 units Human wave that ensued was able to pass the river and get to the wood in the advance phase with a couple of units. In the meantime, no access to italian OBA and the radio observer was first broken and then killed by a sniper. The russian sniper took another italian leader and the killer MG stack led by the 9-2 wreak havoc into the italian lines. My opponent conceaded with good reasons.
A scenario not for everyone, The defence has to be prepared very well, and you cannot get the attack wrong.
A difficult scenario.

What is there to say about Red Don? It's slaughter on ice and so it was in our game. The Italian OBA wreaked the primary Russian attack. By Turn 3, the Russians were out of juice and gave the concession. It was a red dawn.

Ron's Russians tried to cross the frozen river but were cut to pieces by my Italians. In particular, the Italian HMG seemed to have an inexhaustible supply of bullets. Ron conceded at the end of turn 1 when half his force were either broken or dead.

Things started out incredibly hot when the Russian MG kill stack went on the best rate tear I've ever seen. I believe I kept RoF 11 times with the MMGs and HMG, and then another 3 more shots with the HMG. And the only reason I stopped was because I had nothing left to shoot. The poor 8-0 Italian leader that was with some guys that got vaporized had been wounded and then turned berserk, charging into the river to take on the Russian horde. Needless to say, he was not much longer for this world. To make matters worse, the Italian radio busted. Next turn saw a stack of Russians run into a minefield and a MMG lost for good to overheating. The Italians for their part lost a mortar for good, and some lucky Russian advance fire ousted their 8-1 and HMG squad. This was looking like it could be over very soon. But there were still enough Italians to prevent a complete bum rush, enough wire to make maneuvering difficult, and going up and down the snowy banks was slow work. The Italians lucked out getting their 8-1 and squad back, being joined by a hero. Had it not been for this I really do think the game would've been over the next turn. As it was the Russians just could not break free from the tree-lined riverbank, and their kill stack had run out of targets. The next few turns saw the Russians just try to soften up the remaining Italians who were lining the hill, but it was not easy going as no less than 4 Italian MMCs had turned Fanatic over the course of the game. The Russians managed to sneak 1.5 squads to the far back hill, but the others were desperately clinging to their winter camo concealment trying to survive shots from the 8-1, hero, and fanatic units. At some point the Italian radio did come back to life, but soon lost contact again. On the last turn the Russians made a strong bid for the northeastern and east central hills, having two decidedly dangerous 5-point stacks on each. However, one stack was in a trench, and the other hopefully protected by the 9-2. I had advanced a HS into CC with the concealed Italian radio operator (who had successfully put a SR in play), thinking I could either kill him or at least tie him up in melee. But I realized that if he kept concealment, didn't attack, and survived, that he'd be able to tune into that radio again (you're welcome, Scott for pointing that out). Thankfully for me his coordinates got loused up in communication, and the FFE dropped directly onto himself, only eliminating 2 HS of mine. So, in the end, the Russians had 15VP of units on the hills in this crazy-filled action fest.
