Overview:

The rebellious Iraqi Government was caught by surprise on 19 April when the Royal Navy began to disembark elements of the 20th Indian Brigade at Basra. The Iraqi's mood soured further when informed the rest of the 10th Indian Division would arrive within a fortnight. Some 200 troops of the 2/7 Gurkha Rifles immediately seized the dock areas at Ma'qil and the airfield at Shaibah, and began to set up a base camp. Consolidation efforts were slowed due to logistics; the situation was further exacerbated by a series of strikes by local dock workers. Days passed. Gurkhas were eventually deployed to secure other areas of Basra; the 3/11th Sikh Regiment took over security of Ma'qil.
