Overview:

On 3 August, XXXVI Corps ordered its divisions to tie down the enemy opposite them and to create favorable conditions for a resumption of the offensive. That order was almost immediately superseded by another, instructing the local forces to resume the offensive in the southern sector of the Finnish 6th Division, and stating that reinforcements could not be counted on. The XXXVI Corps decided to 'stake everything on one card' -- the thrust of the Finnish 6th Division to Nurmi Mountain. The 169th Division (German) front would be stripped to the bare minimum, creating a battle-group of two battalions. The attack jumped off on 19 August but made little progress. By August 27 the Germans were too weak to attack any further. They fortified their positions two kilometers to the north of Uulantoinwaara. By this time the Russian 104th Division advanced between the two Axis forces to destroy the remnants of the German unit. The Russian attack progressed as expected but with the Finns to their backs, they had to split their forces.
