Overview:

After the battle Joachim Peiper was famously quoted, in apparent frustration, "The damned engineers! The damned engineers!" This outburst was caused by the men of the 291st Engineer Combat Battalion dropping the Neufmoulin bridge that leads to Habiemont. While this event happened down the road from Stavelot, a similar situation played out at the Amblève crossing. There, the SS-Troopers of Kampfgruppe Sandig were already across the river, now on the defensive against the push-back by the American forces being assembled to re-capture, then drop the bridge. The fighting in Stavelot had been reduced in terms of intensity, but the German soldiers were still on the ground. Some of them were putting up a stiff fight in the Tanneries Block in the Société Anonyme des Tanneries, and across the rue Neuve. AT 1645 hours the mortar platoon of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, firing from Cheneaux, laid down support along the route du Vieux-Château.
