Overview:
Field Marshal Rommel intended to cut off British Forces at El Alamein, so he ordered an all-out offensive to destroy the British before Allied reinforcements arrived in Africa. Thus began the Battle of Alam Halfa. General Enrico Frattini commited the 185th Parachute Division "Folgore" (in its baptism of fire) to attack and establish a fixed position in Deir Alinda to cover the left flank of the 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions' main attack. The Italian IX Battalion was feverously entrenching and building sangars in the Deir Alinda area as port of the consolidation of the attack. One Thousand yards to the east, the KiwI's of the 18th New Zealand Battalion could hear the Italians preparing their fighting positions and at 1800 hours launched a counter-attack with elements of C Company supported by three Valentine tanks and three carriers.Attacker: New Zealand (C Company, 18th (Auckland) Battalion, 4th Brigade, 2nd New Zealand Division with A Squadron, 46th Royal Tank Regiment)
Defender: Italian (IX Folgore Battalion, 187th Reggimento Fanteria Paracadutsti and 185th Reggimento Artiglieria Paracadutisti, 185th Divisione Paracadutsti (Folgore))
