The Independent Motorized Rifle Brigade of Special Purpose (OMSBON) was created by the Soviet political police of the NKVD. In it, the Multinational Battalion was formed with the purpose of recruiting foreigners of Bolshevik ideology. The 4th Battalion Company was made up largely of Spanish Republican volunteers and other Spanish-speaking individuals. They were trained to act as partisan guerrillas behind enemy lines. In January 1943, they participated with a reinforced Soviet battalion in operations to clean up Ukrainian nationalist groups armed by the Germans who were acting as anti-communist guerrillas when the Soviets recovered the territory.
