Overview:
As the battle for the northern flank of the Ardennes raged, Major General Matthew Ridgway's XVIII Corps found itself at a pivotal moment. Despite their initial success in dislodging the Germans on the north side of the Salm River, the American offensive got bogged down. While the newly arrived 75th Infantry Division had not yet entered into action, the 30th Infantry Division, veterans of Normandy and defenders of Kampfgruppe Peiper, launched its attack from Malmedy.
