Overview:

The Green Islands were garrisoned mostly by depot troops, as this coral atoll was the strategic staging base for supply barges trying to supply Bougainville from Rabaul. By December 1943, the Allies had decided that the Green Islands must be taken to complete the encirclement of Rabaul and cut off supplies to Bougainville. On the 2nd of February, the Japanese garrison was bolstered by 77 battle hardened volunteers of the Wada Company. The task of taking the Green Islands was given to the New Zealand 14th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division and commenced on 15 February with an unopposed landing on Nissan.

2025-11-13(A) Alex Ashton vs Ian MorrisA New Zealand winIan gave me the balance as he wanted to play with the Japanese.
The balance provided me with a mortar. I was able to successfully lay smoke which allowed me to cross the open ground with only one unit DM.
Once across I had too much fire power and was able to edge myself forward towards the victory condition hexes.
Game came down to the last Close Combat roll which I won to secure control of the necessary victory hexes.
Without the smoke I suspect Ian’s machine guns would have shredded me trying to cross the open ground.

I setup with the two clearings in the north west, the 10-1 and hmg defended the cactus hedge line together with the 137 in the isolated single jungle hex, behind them both was one of the squads. The 237 had the mortar which never got involved, first occupying one of the clearing PFZ which had a narrow view to the south-east. It eventually retreated to cover the enclosed 3 hex clearing to prevent the New Zealanders coming from the east getting through. the east flank however lasted well to prevent the break through that was needed.
2025-02-20(A) Andy Bagley vs Mike Grogan New Zealand winA very unusual scenario with interesting SSRs: the Japanese are defending one or two "hidden" clearings in the jungle, which the New Zealanders must find and capture whilst also trying to prevent the Japanese retreating off-board. Our game felt a bit pro-NZ, as I moved fairly easily round the East and West flanks (fortunately avoiding straying), and the Japanese - who defended two close-together clearings - were surrounded and wiped out by the end of turn 5. But this may be about more subtle placement of the PFZs and making the most of Japanese HIP and CC advantages - plus getting a few good DRs which the Japanese didn't here. Certainly a scenario I'd play again.
