Operation Exporter had taken far longer and been more expensive than the Allies had anticipated. The Vichy French, angered by the bloody British assault on their navy during Operation Catapult and the failed, but also bloody attack on Dakar., were now much more willing to fight than had originally been expected. As Exporter ground on towards its inevitable end, the capture of Damour on the Mediterranean Sea was to be the last stop before Beirut. The Commonwealth Forces advanced on a two-mile front with the Vichy French's right flank being assaulted by the pioneers of the 2/2 Battalion.
