Overview:
The 6th Panzer Army was conducting defensive operations east of Wiener Neustadt after retreating north from Lake Balaton. SS-Brigadeführer Hellmuth Becker's much depleted 3rd SS Panzer Division "Totenkopf" was directed to conduct a local counterattack at Horitschon to rescue the beleaguered 587th Grenadier Regiment, 320th Volksgrenadier Division that was about to be encircled by the Soviet 5th Guards Tank Corp. Becker sent a small Kampfgruppe (under the command of Obersturmführer Wenke) which included Totenkopf's last operation Tiger tanks, two Sturmgeschütze and some of Haupsturmführer Reide's halftrack-mounted panzer grenadiers to rescue the Heer troops in Horitschon. A violent tank-verses-tank action erupted.Attacker: Russian (5th Guards Tank Corps, 6th Guards Tank Army)
