Overview:

The 6th Australian Division commenced its attack on the 30,000 man Tobruk garrison at 0540 hours. The 16th Brigade forced a gap through the fortified outer perimeter through which the 19th Brigade moved north to exploit towards the Bardia - El Adem road junction. At midday, the 19th Brigade sent three of its battalions towards Solaro and Fort Pilastrino, hoping to find and destroy the Italian HQ there. The battalions fanned out, with the 2/4 Battalion heading towards Solaro, the 2/11 Battalion towards the harbor, and the 2/8 Battalion westwards towards Pilastrino. The 2/8 soon ran into dug-in tanks, for which it had only grenades and anti-tank rifles to attack with.
