Overview:

After securing Charan Kanoa and repulsing wave after wave of the first Japanese counterattack, the Marines of both the 2nd and 4th Divisions headed inland to expand their perimeter and take Aslito Airfield to the SE of town. A coconut grove stood directly in the way of the quickest route to the airfield. Just like the Japanese before them, they found it would take several efforts to have a chance at their objectives. The final blow to clear the coconut grove fell to the men of the 4th Marine Division as the newly landed U.S. Army 165th RCT went south of them to hit the airfield on the flank. The fight in the coconut grove earlier had been chaos, now the Marines were done with that and the hammer was about to fall.
