Overview:

At the same time elements of the 80th Division were attacking the Americans south of the inlet, they also attacked other elements of the 31st Regiment to the north, namely the 1st Battalion and the 31st Regiment's forward Command Post where Col. MacLean, the regimental commander was leading from the front. These attacks killed or wounded a number o his men, and combined and combined with the news that the inlet was under attack, and the grim news that his medical battalion had been wiped out en route, lead Col. MacLean to decide to withdraw and condense his forces at the inlet for better defense. Removing all but the most essential gear from the trucks of his motorized regiment and loading the wounded, Col. MacLean headed south, recovering his heavy mortar company along the way. As he closed in on the north side of the inlet, Col. MacLean and a reconnaissance force scouted the way ahead and began to take fire from a roadblock near the causeway. Halting the truck column, Col. MacLean ordered elements of C and D Company up into the hills to attack the enemy from the heights above so as to press downwards on the enemy, while he and others attacked along the shoreline.
