Overview:
In the dwindling days of the war, the battered remnants of the 2nd SS-Panzer Division "Das Reich" regrouped to the Danube Canal in Vienna, establishing a formidable defensive perimeter. As the Soviet forces advanced, the beleaguered Germans prepared for the inevitable assault on the Danube bridges, crucial for both retreat and resupply. Despite enduring constant artillery fire, the SS-Grenadiers managed to repel multiple Soviet assaults during the night of April 10th. By the morning of the 11th, German forces still maintained control over a significant area extending from the Floridsdorf Bridge, along the canal, and encompassing the expansive terrain of the Prater, a large park in Vienna. The Soviets escalated their offensive on April 11th with intense artillery bombardments, yet the SS troops steadfastly held their positions.Attacker: Russian (1st Guards Mechanized Corps, 3rd Ukrainian Front)
Defender: German (SS) (SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment "Der Führer" and SS-Panzerregiment 2, 2.SS-Panzerdivision "Das Reich")
