Overview:
"Blitzkrieg on Alytus" - As part of Operation Barbarossa, the 7th Panzer Division advanced towards Alytus on the Niemen River, a crucial stage on the road to Vilnius. Colonel Rothenburg's Gefechtgruppe (battle group), the commander of Panzer Regiment 25, was tasked with capturing the road bridge, while another group was responsible for the railway bridge. Surprised by the enemy's speed, the riflemen of the 5th Tank Division lacked the time to prepare their defenses, and their 76.2 mm guns were unloaded with anti-tank rounds! However, east of Alytus, the 9th Tank Regiment began its advance with its heavy and fragile T-28 tanks. Shortly before noon, Rothenburg's armored units, including those of Panzer-Flamm-Abteilung 101, entered the town along the main avenue, and the battle began...Attacker: German (Gefechtgruppe Rothenburg, III Battalion, Panzer Regiment 25. 7th Panzer Division)
