Overview:
With the loss of Manila, General Tomiyuki Yamashita's Shobu Group became isolated in the mountains of central Luzon by mid-1945. When the summer capital of Baguio fell to U.S. I Corps on 26 April, Allied forces controlled every strategic objective on Luzon save one-the Lepanto copper and gold mines near the town of Mankayan. Due to its strategic nature and location in the mountainous Cordillera region, the Mankayan area was one of the last fortified holdouts for Yamashita's 14th Area Army, and he was willing to leave a rearguard from Lt. Gen. Yoshihara Ozaki 's 19th 'Tora' Division, once one of the IJA's finest, to defend the mines as long as possible. With the division's remaining heavy AA guns, Ozaki's rikusentai-along with less enthusiastic Korean and Formosan laborers-dug in around Mankayan.Attacker: Partisans (USAFIP-NL) (66th Infantry Regiment, United States Armed Forces in the Philippines, Northern Luzon)
