Overview:
The Finns, seeking restitution for the Winter War of 1939, had erupted across the borders and breached the Soviet Karelian front even as the crisis to the south of Leningrad came. In a desperate attempt to salvage something and form a new defense line along the Sestra River, orders went out to break off and retreat southward. One such unit was the 131st Border Battalion, which was to serve as a rearguard. At 1530, orders arrived releasing them to save themselves. . .if they could. Behind them a bakery was on fire, the town hall was ablaze, and ammunition was dwindling. Nevertheless, their young officers organized a fighting withdrawal towards the hills in an attempt to reach newly established lines.Attacker: Finnish (Elements of 1st Parachute Regiment)

2023-09-16 | (A) Taneli Selin | vs | jotudin | Finnish win | First ever full ASL scenario played. It was a long one, I mean rulebook was checked constantly. The game itself was enjoyable and worth the wait of multiple years. Finns won it luckily with one last die roll – losses were catastrophic for both sides.
2023-08-10 | (D) Jack Wilson | vs | Shaun Andrews | Russian win | An old classic that has stood up for over three decades. If you have not played this one, you owe it to yourself to find out why it remains so popular. Shaun played a great game and probably would have won if the wind change DR had not blown a wall of smoke across his exit path.
2023-08-10 | (A) Shaun Andrews | vs | Jack Wilson | Russian win | Jack's being modest. He pulled a rabbit out of a hat (or should I say burning ring of fire) through pure tenacity and sheer doggedness. Jack's Russians looked to get BBQ but he pressed on enabling him to take advantage of a wind change that cut off my exit path with multiple hexes of smoke. I chose to press forward through the smoke making the game a running retreat. In hind sight, the second the wind changed, I should have cut east right into the path his Russians were taking. It is called Fighting Withdrawal for a reason. Great game Jack!
2023-07-08 | (D) Yuqi Xiong | vs | Warf | Finnish win | A good lesson on how Blaze spread. Finnish infantry are real supermen, despite no smoke compablity. Just move forward and win lol. I didn't arrange a safe and orderly retreat, and held fire to keep concealment too often (although hardly will work with 6-4-8 Finns, laying some residual fire is worthwhile). Most of my soldiers were eliniminated by Warf.
2023-07-08 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Steve Etzelmueller | Russian win | I had been losing my desire to play ASL, so Steve suggested we play anything I'd like. I debated a few of my all-time favorites, but ultimately dusted off this old gem. Amazingly enough old grognard Steve had never played it. This being my most-played ever scenario, I warned him he would need to maintain a quick pace as the Finns. As most of my line was concealed, he did very little shooting and a lot of AM into the street, with the not unusual result of a few broken Finns and a lost squad. I self-broke my western two squads back to my commissar to avoid CC. Not much further progress was made Turn 2, with the Russians still heavily manning the walls. A crazed Russian conscript ran to his doom and a squad managed to be taken prisoner (a valuable commodity in this scenario), but once again the western units broke to flee back to the commissar. Turn 3 saw another Russian taken hostage, while his comrades fled to their second line of defense behind the eastern wall and within the central rowhouse. Turn 4 clearly saw the Finns move for a western push, as this was my weakest defended area, The Russians in the middle scattered to try and continue holding the line, while the units in the east all bolted to either start making for the exit or get in better positions. Time was becoming problematic for the Finns. Turn 5 saw the Finns completely bust up the Russians in the west, so the Russians brought on both goalline HIPsters to shore up that part of the board. Meanwhile in the east a couple Russian squads with a LMG and the 8-1 moved to the upper levels, while another had snuck around from the north to harass any Finns trying to make haste along the road. The Finn escape attempt proved unsuccessful on Turn 6, and with not enough time left they called it a day.
2023-05-19 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Steffen Knippel | Finnish win | As part of CASLO XXVII
2023-04-13 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Steve B | Russian win | Warm up open play game before the start of the Bitter Ender Tournament. the Russians started out breaking about half of my attacking Finnish squads...totally stalling my right flank push. Was able to get a number of the squads back in the game and took out a couple of Russian squads, but the time taken prevented any reasonable chance of a Finn win. I conceded after 6 turns. Great game Steve!
2023-04-03 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Jim Jordan | Finnish win | Played at Where The Iron Crosses Grow Invitational Tournament. Time concession after 2 turns.
2023-01-17 | (A) Terrence Dorsey | vs | Solo | Russian win | Mis-anticipated how much time it would take to get off the board for both sides. Russians got clobbered in combat, but managed to get their last good order squads off the board.
2022-12-16 | (A) Patrick Bonner | vs | self | Finnish win | Finns seem a bit over-powered, but they didn't win by a huge margin.
2022-11-26 | (A) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Cusick, John | Russian win
2022-09-18 | (A) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Broadhurst, Bill | Finnish win
2022-06-06 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Scott Fischbein | Finnish win | The Finnish attack was focused on the east side of the board. The attack progressed slowly forcing its way across the road into the row houses. On the west side, the Finnish maintained a small force preventing a safe Russian withdrawal. Broken Finnish units repeatedly failed to rally while numerous consecutive Finnish 7 DR activating the Russian sniper complicated the Finnish options. But the flank was forced open and the game transitioned to a race with strategically placed blocking units. The outcome was unclear until Turn 6 Russian MPh when the Russian 9-1 and 4-4-7 broke securing a clear win for the Finnish.
2022-06-05 | (D) Scott Fischbein | vs | Craig Renier | Finnish win | Always enjoy this scenario... despite having played it a few times, I made the mistake of concentrating on the "Fighting" more than the "Withdrawal", and despite Craig's run of perfectly average (ie: 7) DRs that granted me numerous sniper opportunities, I lost the race to get off the board. I also made the mistake (which I've made before) of waiting a bit too long to un-HIP my MG nest near the graveyard, keeping the element of surprise, but losing the chance for more shots. Craig did a nice job of maneuvering and avoiding LOS as he managed to get multiple units in position to exit, so I conceded.
2022-02-21 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Martin Hubley | Finnish win | Martin is a great player. The Soviet Sniper was strangely silent as Martin only rolled "7" a few times. I think I hit his sniper more often! In the end, he captured a bunch of POWs and ended up running them off the board. I tried to shoot them, I really did. Ha!
2021-10-20 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Rich Matheson | Finnish win | The Finnish morale weighed heavily throughout their advance, regularly passing MCs and Rallying the few times they needed to. Spreading fires also helped cover the advance subduing the few available Russian attacks. In Turn 6, the Finns could exit more VPs unharassed than the Russians had within striking distance of the board edge.
2021-09-05 | (A) Russell Dewhurst | vs | Steven Smith | Finnish win
2021-08-24 | (D) David Ramsey | vs | Martin Barker | Finnish win (VASL Log) | Great game, Martin won with one leader advancing off after a close mid game struggle. Illuminating Rounds 52
2021-05-06 | (D) Andy Goldin | vs | Stephen Worrel | Russian win | I had hot dice on the first game turn while the Finns had to try to force their way across the street and stacked up a bunch of casualties. This bought me time to withdraw to the middle of the board, where my rearguard slowed the Finns again. The foot race was on once again, so that by turn 5 I was ready to exit most of my force but stopped just short of the board edge to delay the Finns. A well placed LMG allowed me to put down a fire lane through which few Finns could pass and I won by exiting just a couple more squads than Steve. Great game, well played by both sides.
2021-04-22 | (A) M T | vs | T.L. | Russian win
2021-04-22 | (D) Tommi Lehtinen | vs | M T | Russian win | Very eventful game. First two turns looked good for the Russian. They held 3 superior Finnish squads in Melee and slowed the Finnish progress down. On third turn the Finns won all the Melees and together with some lucky shots manages to neutralize several Russian squads and making good gains. However, on turn 5 the Russian dice where hot where it counted, i.e. in -2 shots, and the Finns lost several squads and their almost guaranteed breakthrough on the west flank was slowed to a crawl. Turns six and seven turned out to be as eventful as both teams rushed to the exit. Finns on the western flank and Russians on the eastern flank. Finns had only 5VP available on the west to exit, so they needed to prevent Russians exits on the east flank, where they had not breached Russian line. Everything was culminated to the last move of the last turn where the Russian 8-1 leader dashed to the exit and took a 2-2 shot from a Finnish LMG. The LMG missed and the Russian were able to exist as many VPs as the Finns, so a tightest possible victory for Russians.
2021-04-17 | (A) Dave Mareske | vs | Ben Kacirek | Russian win | The Russians delayed the Finnish just enough that they could not get any EVPs. A good use of HIP and then the SMOKE from the blazes changed direction to limit movement on the west side. Great game for Ben's first game of full ASL!
2021-03-13 | (A) James Forrest | vs | Russian win
2021-02-15 | (A) jon smith | vs | RUSSIAN | Finnish win | Fins got off to a storming start... breaking by ELR 2 russians squads on the other side of the road... but it meant a slow advance... the russians fell back to the wall and formed a solid line, when the fins got there the russian HIP MMG and squad fire laned the road but the fins weathered the firing and pushed through the middle. The real break through was on the east edge of map , where several Finnish squads swept through the Russian defence squad and moved through the smoke, frantic melees broke out in the middle and the Russians stifled out the Finns in the centre blockhouse buildings, But just enough Finns on the east edge were able to keep the pace up and a count up showed the Russians couldnt get enough of the board to match the Finns with 2 turns to go having made a fight of it around the graveyard. The Finns on the west edge were wiped out leaving just 2 broken leaders within reach of the exit edge too... Fun game, which is what matters. Do the FInns just have to deploy everywhere and swarm in a mad rush forwards to get off in time?
2021-01-20 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Loic Gourdon | Russian win | A slow start by me, the Finn, against a pretty good defensive layout by Loic. He's new to ASL and I failed to find a way to crack his defensive layout. He sacrificed a squad or two in the first few turns that ended up being enough to slow me down. Winds picked up to heavy winds which caused the blazes to spread; however, the lack of smoke ended up helping him and hindering me. Great win on his part!
2020-12-03 | (D) Scott Fischbein | vs | Richard Matheson | Russian win | Richard's first full ASL game. He's coming along fast - having progressed through the SKs in a month or so, and now making the leap to the full game. The Finnish supermen made good progress early on, but missed a few opportunities to push ahead further, and didn't quite have the MFs left to get off the board in the last two turns, while the Russians had a few squads that could make it off (especially after the wind shifted in turn 5, clearing out the smoke that was laying in their path). Fun game- looking forward to lots more as Richard continues to hone his skills.

2020-04-21 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Neal Ekengren | Russian win
2020-04-10 | (D) Dave Mareske | vs | Craig Renier | Russian win | This was a teaching scenario which I finished that remained close to the very end, the Russians winning by one EVP. The Russians created lots of fires in the rear causing the Finnish extra movement points and coming up short. Thanks for the great game.
2020-03-10 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Nick Faryna | Russian win | Came to turn 5 First Fire. My HIP MMG opened up on some Finns in the open and got a KIA result on the stack. Also, a 447 with LMG HIP ambushed a stack in the streets. As my opponent said "I have to learn to not stack". He's a new player and he's learning that much earlier in his ASL career than I did.

2020-01-20 | (A) Paul Schorfheide | vs | Russian win | Solo play: I was too conservative with the Finns from the beginning and never caught up. The Russians exited two squads and a leader while the Finns were still more than a turn away.

2019-12-28 | (D) Michael Focht | vs | David Garber | Russian win
2019-12-18 | (D) Raoul Duke | vs | MB | Russian win | A classic for a reason, this one came down to the final move phase of the final turn. If either side stops to shoot, they'll lose, victory comes from a mad dash towards the exits in the MPh, RTPh, and APh interspersed by whatever shots you can take in the DFPh and AFPh. Planning movement is key to both sides, and an unfortunate change of wind can throw all of that careful planning out the window at a moment's notice. A wonderful way to wrap up 2019, I'd play this one again as either side in a heartbeat.
2019-11-29 | (D) Vilis Pavulans | vs | Matias Dahlbäck | Russian win | A tough beginning where the finns lost two and a half squads as prisoners probably decided the game early. The russians managed to escape with the prisoners, running all the way and never looking back. That together with some lucky dicing which stalled the finns made us finish the game a few turns in advance.

2019-11-09 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Andrew Luden | Russian win
2019-10-24 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Magnus Rimvall | Russian win | Finns barely crossed the street on Turn 1, and that remained the pace for the rest of the game - a bit too slow. They just moved past the southern end of the Russian setup area by the end of Turn 3 and that was about a Turn behind where they needed to be. By the end of Turn 5 there was no possible way they could exit any units off the board, while the Russians were guaranteed at least 2 squads. Always a classic.
2019-07-14 | (D) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Nolt, Jim | Russian win
2019-03-23 | (D) John Malaska | vs | Zeb Tingley | Russian win | Early on, my sniper took out the Finn's, so I had free rein with cheap DF shots. Managed to keep my withdrawal orderly, although lost several MMCs to CC/capture. Finns were pressed for time by T4, and just about KIA'd/CR'd/broke to every DF attack. Finns conceded at start of T5, with little hope of exiting the map edge. Two oddities ... my first real playing of ASL1. Second, Finn HS broke on T1, and never rallied (Russian vodka to blame.)

2018-12-30 | (A) Dan Best | vs | Rex Loewen | Russian win
2018-12-28 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Verick Ready | Russian win | Russians held out! In spite of some pretty good shots on my part.
2018-12-09 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Ben Stacey | Finnish win | Finns hit the east side hard, pounding the Russians into submission as they swept forward en masse. Turn 2 was mop up time for them as the Russians scrambled to reposition to the rowhouses in the center of the board. Turn 3 saw the Finns control the S row, blasting the remaining Russian stragglers as they tried to dash across. Turn 4 saw them charge and surround the last remaining Russian bastion and batter them into surrender by the end of the turn. The only unit left to deal with was the as-yet still hidden MMG squad. He was discovered and surrounded on Turn 5 and locked up in melee, allowing the Finns free rein to charge toward the exit.
2018-11-17 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Ben Stacey | Russian win | Finns had an absolutely brutal first turn, losing 5 squads. There was really no recovering from this and, with the Russians matching them in numbers and having the better position, they called it a game after Turn 3.
2018-08-04 | (A) Dan Best | vs | Kermit Mullins | Finnish win
2018-08-04 | (D) Kermit Mullins | vs | Dan Best | Finnish win | Ugh...this scenario is so much more challenging than I ever think. My Russians stumbled about, but still managed to kill 8 Finnish Squads and exit off 12 VP...but Dan exited 19 VP to get the win. Great game!
2018-07-22 | (A) Michael Focht | vs | David Garber | Russian win
2018-05-27 | (A) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Duenskie, Ron | Russian win
2018-04-03 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Phil Wentworth | Russian win | My opponent and I had played this one before but he wanted to try his hands as the attacking Finns again as the first time it ended disastrously. Since this was a pickup game I just recycled my original setup that worked so well without changing a unit. If the first time was a disaster this was a catastrophe. The Finns got absolutely shredded in the opening couple rounds. Whereas my sniper was extremely cold the first time around, it was a much different story this time. By the middle of Turn 3 the Finns were still a move away from reaching the back of the original Russian setup so he figured it was right to call it a day.
2018-01-20 | (A) todd Rezack | vs | Peter Rogneholt | Russian win | The Russians were able to retreat and thus gained the movement advantage on the Finnish
2018-01-06 | (D) todd Rezack | vs | Peter Rogneholt | Finnish win | The Russians were slaughtered as they tried to make a stand. Its best to stay on the move and make your way to the s end ofthe board rather then fighting was my experience. By the second turn the Finnish troops had almost wiped out the Boarder Bat.
2018-01-01 | (A) B-E Karlsson | vs | Russian | Russian win
2017-12-20 | (D) JP Laurio | vs | Arttu | Russian win
2017-11-29 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Are Erlandsen | Russian win | My Schwerpunkt push in the east hit an early snag when my overstacked hex in Z10 went down almost to a man from his HIP 8-1/447 MMG stack in R6. But Finns bounce back quickly, and by Turn 2 we were well on our way again to pushing down the board. I probably would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for a pesky turn too long trying to exchange shots across the P-S street. As it was, Are played an almost perfect fighting withdrawal defense. He correctly calculated on Turn 5 that I would not have enough MF to get anybody off the board, so I did my best to position my men to make sure he didn't make it either. But he managed to sneak off two squads and a leader to seal the victory.
2017-11-19 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Phil Wentworth | Russian win | Some hot Russian dice withered away at the Finns from the opening moves, causing them an average body bag count of 1.5 squads each turn, while the Russians didn't take a casualty until the 4th turn (and that was only due to a failed interdiction MC). By the start of Turn 5 the Finns had just reached the edge of the cemetery and would have to cross a lot of open ground against a lined up and primed Russian defense that outnumbered them 3:2 (this not even counting the two HIP squads stuck back at the goal line) so they called it a day.
2017-06-14 | (A) Alan Krause | vs | Tom Arnold | Finnish win | I was aggressive and his sniper was very quiet, which helped to offset me malfing then removing my MMG in turn 1.

2017-02-25 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Bronson Barnhart | Finnish win | The Finns were able to cross the S row on Turn 3, getting behind the Russians who were covering the street from the east and west. From there it was just a matter of running off squads while the rest of them tied up the defenders.

2016-02-14 | (A) Colin Emerson | vs | Michael Dorosh | Finnish win | Fires raging out of control. Super men Finns. Russians put up a Defensive line South of the graveyard. Managed to squeak a few squads off the board with the aid of the Russian destroying his MMG's. Finns need to move fast and be aggressive, Russians better be sneaky.

2012-06-15 | (A) Russell Dewhurst | vs | Gordon | Russian win | As the Finns I was too slow to start moving, so most of my squads had no chance to make it off the board. Still went right down to the wire, if I'd had some lucky dice rolls on the final turn I'd have stopped any Russians from exiting. Lots of fun with burning and collapsing buildings.

2012-01-20 | (D) Richard Carter | vs | Stephen Mackintosh | Russian win | HIP MMG in row house was decider. I think he thought is was up in the multilevel building beyond the cemetery. Able to get some close -2 shots.
2011-10-29 | (A) nathan wegener | vs | Mike G | Finnish win | Good game down to the last half turn. Both sides had to vol break to move forward. Last rally phase 4 Finnish units self rallied to provide a defense which laid down 2 LMG firelanes. Commissar rallied 2 HS and a conscript squad but had to cross the firelanes. Only needed one to exit but all 4 failed to get through!

2011-09-26 | (A) Luke Sineath | vs | Sam Harper | Russian win
2011-08-14 | (D) Luis Felip | vs | R | Finnish win | The finns (me) advanced beating all the opposition, but 2/3 of my troops coudn't reach the border for the VP, so the russian (my girlfriend) won. Very good scenario.
2011-06-27 | (D) Paul Jones | vs | Roberto Antivalle | Russian win
2011-06-25 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Dominic McGrath | Russian win | Good game but outclassed by a better player. Missed a 4-2 shot at the end that decimated my 3 squad stack...

2011-06-25 | (A) Ian Morris | vs | Miles Wiehahn | Russian win

2011-05-08 | (A) Aaron Sibley | vs | Joe Arthur | Finnish win
2011-04-15 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Martin Barker | Finnish win | Great scenario - came down to the last MPh, with hardly a prep fire in sight for the whole game...
2011-02-05 | (D) Oliver Schumacher | vs | Michi | Russian win | A classic. Solid scenario. Lots of movement
2011-01-02 | (D) Paul Messina | vs | David Hassler | Russian win | Great scenario! As usual with David and I, this one went down to the wire. I, as the Russian, got a few really lucky DRs at the end of the game to secure a hard fought win. Highly recommend this scenario to anyone who enjoys all infantry battles!
2010-12-10 | (D) Steve Bowen | vs | DD | Russian win | Won by the smallest possible margin an the last move of the game. One of the greats. Needs a couple of plays to understand the dynamics.
2010-09-04 | (A) Andy Beaton | vs | Finnish win | Learning scenario - my opponent did very well for a first time, and we both had a blast. Great introductory game.

1997-05-01 | (A) James Lowry | vs | Colin | Russian win | Learning game against my then-current roommate. I didn't hustle enough, and the Russians were able to match my exits for the win. Highlight was one Finnish squad generating two Heroes in back-to-back MCs. "Why am I even shooting at this guy?"
1991-02-23 | (A) Kermit Mullins | vs | Scott Waites | Russian win |
