Overview:

The airfield at Maleme figured prominently in the German plans for the capture of Crete. “Group West”. Commanded most of the 1st Assault Regiment under the command of General Meindl, consisted of three detachments: one to land at the Tavronitis Bridge; one to destroy the AA positions and ease the way for the following troop-carrier transports; and one to land on the slopes of Point 107, high ground to the south of the field. Major Braun drew the task of seizing and holding the long span over the dry Tavronitis. Given free rein to plan his assault, he decided to daringly land in the dry bed itself and then take the British MG posts which guarded each side of the bridge from the rear.

2025-02-08(A) David Garvin vs Mike van Hoy New Zealand winSome unique ASL happened here. Great match. The NZ Sniper was effective in pinning a squad that was subsequently jumped in CC. My German sniper broke a squad, routing him out of the Victory Area, but my German Paratroopers fell just short of the objective. A fun game I'd play any time, either side.
2025-01-22(A) Craig Renier vs Dave Mareske New Zealand winThe New Zealanders were concentrated on the middle of the west side of the battlefield with a small force on the east side. The German gliders entered in three groups - 1 on the east side of the valley, one on the northwest and the largest on the southwest. Allied AA fire damaged one glider which crashed in woods eliminating one squad. The remainder landed and exited in good order. The initial German assault progressed well. A key NZ strong point in the west was eliminated early. However, failed TCs slowed the German advance. And then a number of failed MCs, some with box cars, weakened the assault, particularly with the force on the east side. In the final turns, the NZ eastern force consisted of 2 squads, one of which was broken. The broken NZ squad rallied. The Germans were down to 2 GO squads and a leader. One was ELR'd, CR'd in AFPh with fire from the revived NZ squad. The other GO NZ squad brashly entered CC at even odds and reduced the 2nd German squad. The Germans successfully neutralized all NZ forces on the west side, but there was nothing left of the attackers on the east.
2025-01-21(D) Dave Mareske vs Craig Renier New Zealand win
2024-03-19(A) Ben B vs Kiwis New Zealand winI played this scenario as the German attackers and this was my first experience using gliders and mortars. I was successful at dislodging the defending Kiwis on the west side of the bridge but the R9,S9,S10 building was too tough a nut for my attacking squads to crack. If I'd had another turn, I may have been able to push them out but due to time constraints and limited options, my German squads were cut down in their assault.

2024-02-05(A) Peyton Spreacker vs Brandon DegaA New Zealand winGerman landed with no harassment from AA guns, but took casualties from ground fire after landing. Germans had early success, but got bogged down in the river bed and could not scale the sides.
