Overview:

The battle for the center of Berlin, above all for the Reichstag—the final battle—had begun. This blackened ruin was to be the focal point of Soviet attacks for five days, and every formation in the Red Army from Front to regiment was determined to get there first and gain Stalin’s favor. Best situated to reach the building was Kuznetsov’s 3rd Shock Army, but it was blocked by the Spree, here about 80 feet wide with granite-faced banks. Most of the bridges had been blown, but the Moltke Bridge, covered by antitank obstacles and what was left of Germany’s remaining armor and artillery, still remained. To seize it, two assault groups supported by self-propelled guns were deployed. At dusk on the 28th, they launched their attack behind a major bombardment.

2020-05-27(D) Ulric Schwela vs Stefano Cuccurullo German (SS) winRussian threw the towel in on turn 8, having run out of time and still having a (very thin) wall of Germans to get through, without the overwhelming force needed to achieve the VC. One quarter of the Russians were MIA, one quarter were lying broken here and there, and there were never enough leaders to both rally broken troops and keep the forward ones moving, and five ISUs were stilled in the streets, all fallen to the same immobile Panther in a building which had broken its gun, only to repair it and nail two more ISU before succumbing to the last one. The 88L was on the last map to block the exit area, and never got to fire a shot; conversely the 75L also never fired a shot, having been knocked out by OBA, the crew managing to escape and keep fighting on the front line. The defence essentially focused on putting 2nd line up front, backed up by conscripts likely to need rallying after the bombardment, while the 1st and SS took up key defensive positions. Key assets were placed out of LOS of the offboard observer, even if it meant less than ideal fire zones. The bombardment was not too bad, eliminating a 467+LMG+8-0, and breaking about half a dozen squads. Russian attacked half'n'half on the two flanks, putting a HMG death star in the centre which was very effective, destroying numerous squads during the game with its 20 FP ROF 3. German defence was perhaps a bit too aggressive and should have retreated a little faster, as it risked handing victory early. Russian OBA was fairly effective, mostly smoke and a couple of painful HE missions. German OBA only appeared once due to faulty radio, a red card, and finally Russian fire, but when it did it landed perfectly and stopped one flank for a whole turn. Germans kept melting away at a worrying rate, but a few lucky shots and CC rolls kept them in the game to the end.
