Overview:

Following the costly repulse of Company B of the 2nd Marine Regiment on Tanambogo, the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Marines was ordered to land on Gavutu at dawn, relieve the exhausted paratroopers, and capture Tanambogo by the end of the day. Ashore at 0700 that Saturday, the 3rd Battalion spent the morning methodically blasting the Japanese out of cave emplacements with TNT. At 1330, with Gavutu secured, they turned their attention to the island across the inlet. A two pronged attack was settled on. Company I, along with two tanks and supported by continuous air and naval bombardment, would make an amphibious assault on the same beach where the night attack had come to grief. Meanwhile, a platoon of K Company would rush across the causeway on foot to outflank the Japanese defenders on the hill.
