Overview:
American naval planners decided that Gavutu and Tanambogo, although not deemed of primary importance, must be secured. Concerned with greater matters than this “sideshow,” Brigadier-General William Rupertus, Assistant Commander of the 1st Marine Division and tagged by Vandegrift to head the Florida phase of WATCHTOWER—America’s first step in the amphibious liberation of the Pacific—selected the unproven 1st Marine Parachute Battalion to accomplish this mundane chore. Major Robert H. Williams, although disappointed that he would not be leading his highly trained and impatient paratroopers in an airdrop as their first combat action, and concerned about certain limitations placed on his phase of the operation, nevertheless was glad to see his small (351 men) battalion finally get some recognition.Attacker: American (USMC) (1st Marine Parachute Battalion, Companies B, I and K, 2nd Marine Regiment and Company B, 2nd Marine Tank Battalion)
Defender: Japanese (3rd Kure SNLF, Yokahama Air Group, 14th Naval Construction Batalion, and Gaomi AA Platoon)
