Overview:

The German army was frozen in place. Bitter cold and deep snow made the thinly-clad Wehrmacht dig in and fight first for warmth, then the Russians. The Siberians were well equipped for war in the snow, but the Soviet High Command still threw them piecemeal at the German strongpoints. The much-heralded Soviet winter counteroffensive was in fact a series of small-unit actions amongst the white and evergreen of the Russian winter. The raid on the crossroads northwest of Staritsa was just one of many. To protect the critical crossroads, the Germans had cut a maze of trenchworks through the snow. If not in comfort, at least in cover, sentries peered into the snowy distance. Deep silence. Then, the sound of tank engines. The white, boxy shapes of T-34s with their snowmen-like supporting troops emerged from the east heading straight for the crossroads.

2022-10-27(A) Mark Thompson vs Germans (Marc Grad) Russian winThe Russians came in along the Southern road relatively unscathed by maintaining concealment and using a 9-0 Commissar to boost morale. Massed 6-2-8 FGs broke the German MMG squad in building X1 and the PIV and 37AT were unable to slow the T-34s in positioning their exit through the BB1-AA1-Z1 woods (via trail break). The Germans conceded on Turn 4. IMHO, play mechanics of Extreme Winter (e.g., secret Bog Check DR/dr) combined with platoon movement are cumbersome (and too dice determinative) - might playability to remove secret Bog Check DR/dr for Russian AFVs in exchange for German balance and/or other concessions.
2020-11-23(A) Dave Mareske vs Dennis Dowd Russian win

(VASL Log)
Playing of the Scenario of the Month. The Germans eliminated their MA on the dug in tank on the first shot. The Germans had a clustered defense and the Russians came right at them, avoiding the bore-sighted hexes. A failed attempt at placement of a DC and the AT getting Xed on another "12" sealed the Russian win with nothing left to stop the tanks from moving off. vlog attached. Enjoy.
2020-11-08(D) Tom Kearney vs Walt McWilliams German winThe Germans managed to immobilize a T-34 after the tank platoon inexplicably stopped. Machine gun and rifle fire whittled away the supporting Soviet infantry. No Russian units were able to exit.
2020-11-05(A) Chris Anthony vs Daniel Soukup German win

(VASL Log)
The German defense was very well thought out with placement of the VIE and PaK 35/36 backing up a front line of squads. They covered the exit hexes well. Unfortunately for the Germans, the two infantry squads with the machine guns did not want to defend very long, at least after an initial killing of the first Soviet squad that entered. They were quickly broken, then eliminated from the woods on the Southeast side of the board in a matter of a few turns by quick Soviet infantry advance. Save for one more half squad (a key loss given later events) that was eliminated in CC, the Russians did not lose any more infantry. The T-34s moved north of the woods and eliminated the dug-in IVE in two shots (better lucky than good). With 3 T-41s and 4.5 squads facing one Pak 35/36 and a surviving vehicle crew with 2 turns to go, it as in the bag. The T-34 platoon was making good time to the exit hexes and only had to roll over the undefended trenches. That is until the Germans add two late recruits, General Winter (turncoat) and Mother Earth. Two of the three tanks bogged just one hex from exit. During the last turn, one was eliminated by the tireless anti-tank crew pumping round after round into the bogged and motionless AFV, finally eliminating one of the two stuck vehicles. While this was happening, the Soviet infantry was able to sneak off the board with two German leader prisoners. The remaining Soviet vehicle's crew tried everything to free the bogged T-34, but that made it only worse and immobilized it in the trench. The sweet siren call of victory was dashed upon the harsh rocks and dirt of the German trenches, only one hex from exiting the winning VPs. The final score was 19 VPs for the Siberians (one half squad short of the required VPs) and a ticket for their commander to the gulags on the Russian wastelands.
2020-11-05(A) Tom Kearney vs Alan Saltzman German winThe Germans destroyed two T-34’s in CC so it was up to the infantry to get some guys off the map. Effective fire slowed the Russian infantry advance. I was able to exit only 15 points of the required 20. This was the first time either of us had played the scenario and it was a great time!
