Overview:

Four days into Operation Crusader had seen the plans of both Cunningham and Rommel thrown into confusion by the chaos of this desert maelstrom. The ‘Desert Fox’ had finally been convinced of the seriousness of the British offensive and ordered a counterattack on the 7th Armored Brigade holding Sidi Rezegh. Panzers of the 21st Panzer Division began to maul the armor holding the airfield when word was sent to the two remaining brigades of the 7th Armored Division, the 4th and the 22nd, to rush immediately to the airfield. The Afrika Korps then sent their own armored columns to meet these new threats.
