Overview:

The American III Corps was tightening the noose on the surrounded German forces within the Ruhr Pocket. Approaching the region of Iserlon, the 99th Division encountered a kampfgruppe commanded by Hauptmann Albert Ernst, a tenacious fighter and panzerjager ace, known as “The Tiger of Vitsbk”. Included in Ernst’s force were four Jagdtigers. This group fought a tough rear guard action in which 50 American vehicles including eleven Sherman tanks were destroyed. In Iserlon, Ernst linked up with some die-hard remnants of Panzer Lehr Division and made his last stand. . .
Attacker: American (2nd Battalion, 394th Infantry Regiment, and elements of the 629th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 99th Infantry Division)

2015-04-25(A) X von Marwitz vs Martin Mayers German winBig meaty scenario. I played the US in this one. Difficulty for the US is the small number of leaders, US GO morale and a lack of buildings that afford good LOS. Initial movement might be dangerous. The German scourge, of course, is bad quality troops and ELR 2. Their biggest assets are the 22H4 building which allows formidable LOS for HMGs and the arty observer. The impenetrable German TDs mainly serve to keep the US TDs honest. I exchanged 3x 60mm MTR for a Btln MTR 60mm OBA. That way, I was planning to get indepletable Smoke, that is WP. But OBA is a fickle mistress. I could not get down a SINGLE fire mission for 2 modules in 5 turns. No contact, radio broken, inaccurate, SR out of LOS, not being able to maintain contact... The German OBA wreaked havoc: A single FFE:1 scored DRs of 2x 3 and 1x 2. CH on my 9-2 leader. Killed him along with 2 full squads, a .50 cal and a MTR. Other .50 Cal lay unpossessed, CRed/broke 3rd squad. The 2x 3s CR'ed 2 further squads & broke the remains. The center in shambles. No leader left there. I captured the 22X7 building in force but just could not bring my FP to bear: His 9-2+HMG constantly broke me at 16 hexes range and his arty srcrewed up things there twice, too. Two of my TD's MAs malfed (one on the 2nd shot), both to be recalled: One due to failed repair, the other one due to snakes by the German 9-2+HMG. A third one was recalled due to a Sniper. Incredibly, I created no less than 4 (!) heroes during the game. 2 of them were immediately killed again and the others could not really bring their power to bear due to insuffient range for their DRM. The "nicest" result that my 9-2, 2 heroes and 6 squad-equivalents died from was a K/2. I managed to nibble away 10.5 squad-equivalents and a German 8-1. His quality troops (along with the 3 Jagd Pz VI) were on bd 18 mostly unscathed. I planned to take the least necessary amount of buildings there due to difficult approaches to that area. The big factor in this game was that my OBA just would not get down. For that reason, I was never able to suppress his "tower" with his observer in the back. I, in turn, was devastated by the German OBA. Things would have been more interesting, if the OBA would have been a bit more even. Still fun scenario. Might want to play it again with "normal" OBA distribution.
