Overview:
"Assault on Gambsheim" - - - On 31st December, Hitler launched Operation Nordwind, in northern Alsace, on the Allied right wing of the Battle of the Bulge. The Americans withdrew to the Vosges region, leaving Strasbourg defenseless. The French however refused to see the enemy take the Alsatian capital, sought to defend the city. The Germans established a strong bridgehead in the area of Gambsheim, and on 5th January, the first units of the 3rd Algerian Infantry Division arrived to establish a defensive line. The next day, the French and Americans sought to force the German bridgehead, but the first attack by the US 242nd Infantry Regiment failed. On 7th January, it was the turn of the riflemen of the 3rd RCA, backed by legionnaires and 2 armoured cavalry regiments to attack.Attacker: Free French (Elements 3rd Regiment de Tirailleurs Algeriennes and 3rd Co, I/RMLE and III/1st RCA & 7th RCA)
