A depleted German infantry company holds a village against a battalion
level wave assault. The Russian charge swept across the open fields towards the enemy.
Many were cut down by machinegun fire; others blundered into minefields
and wire. Those who broke and ran were sent back into the fray by
the NKVD security police. It was easier to fight the Germans than face
the NKVD. Survivors of the initial charge fought their way into the
village where a wild melee developed. In the end it did not really matter
who won, it was who survived to see another day. That's what was important.
