Overview:
The Romanian 4th Army had invested Odessa after failing to take the city on the march. On 22 September, the Soviet Independent Coastal Army counterattacked the passive Romanian V Corps on the eastern perimeter. While the 421st and 157th Rifle Divisions attacked by the land route, the Soviet 3rd Naval Brigade landed unopposed behind the Romanian 15th Division at Grigorievka. In the Red Army’s first real combined operation of the war, Soviet paratroopers were airdropped in small groups to cause confusion. The 15th Division was in the process of receiving replacement troops and had thinned its defenses near the coast. The artillery positions threatening Odessa were in peril as the troops from the 15th Division were surprised by troops in all directions.Attacker: Russian (Elements 3rd Naval Brigade, 421st Rifle Division, and Parachute Troops)
