Tsar Boris III kept Bulgaria out of the war with adroit diplomatic moves. Yet, early in August 1942, when Mussolini moved Italian troops into the Jesserina mining area along the Albanian border with Macedonia, fighting nearly broke out over this resource rich region. On October 13th, 200 Albanian troops, supported by an Italian battalion, moved into the border town of Jesserina. Desultory firing resulted between raiding Italians and Albanians on one side and the Bulgarian outposts on the other. Late in the day one Italian column approached a stronghold of the Bulgarian 14th Division and the firing got pretty heavy. . .
