Overview:

In early December 1943, the Soviets began developing plans to drive the Germans from the Dnieper River that winter. Koniev and Vatutin launched an offensive to encircle the remaining troops in the Korsun Pocket, the last part of the Dnieper line still in German hands. Despite desperate defense and difficult terrain, nevertheless, by 3rd February, two German Corps had found themselves caught in a trap. Manstein assembled all available Panzer forces to rescue the trapped men. Quickly, Koniev and Vatutin found themselves fighting on two fronts, trying to restrain the trapped forces from breaking out, and at the same time repelling the relief attempt. Both sides suffered from the weather conditions and only fatigued and decimated units remained…
