Overview:
After months of hard combat, the Hermann Goering Panzer Division had been pulled back in April to refit and train. This period only lasted several days as Soviet pressure towards Berlin forced higher command to put them back in the line. Several days later, the Panther battalion, led by Oberstleutnant Rossman, ambushed elements of the 1st Polish Tank Corps. After 43 of their AFVs were destroyed, others surrendered. The Germans had just captured 12 tanks/tank destroyers in perfect working condition, and this total included 4 JS-IIs. They immediately painted on the Balkenkreuz and added the new armor to their panzer strength. The entire Hermann Goering Parachute Panzer Corps was ordered to attack to stem the tide of the Soviet push on Berlin. The Panzer Division’s attack ran straight into the flank of the 1st Polish Tank Division about 30 kilometers south of Dresden.
