Overview:

VASL setup file is below under User Files. . . . During Operation Citadel, Ponyri Station became key terrain to both sides since the Orel-Kursk railway went right through it. It took the Germans two days to break through the first echelon defenses, but they were eventually attacking the 2nd echelon. The 307th Rifle Division was reinforced with numerous units including the 1442nd Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment with SU-152s and the 129th Tank Brigade, which itself was reinforced by the 51st Tank Brigade and included some American made Stuart tanks. The Germans were able to capture the embankment in the north and establish a foothold in the village. The Germans launched a ferocious attack on the morning of the 7th with two battalions of infantry and 50 AFVs.
Attacker: German (Reinforced elements of 1019th Regiment, 307th Rifle Regiment)

2021-12-30(D) Ken Rutkowski vs George H Russian win
2021-06-26(D) walter mcwilliams vs Al Salzman Russian winBig Al and I had a very good time with this meaty scenario. It has been on my "To Play" list for quite sometime. The Russians were able to hold on for the win in the T7 and EE8 buildings. Al's first Smoke DR of the game would cause a Sniper 1 which broke a FT toting squad to break, the sniper would 1/2 squad him a turn or two later and that FT would never get in the fight. Al was perfect in CC, never lost a single one killing more Russians in CC than with firepower I think but in the end the Russian's were simply able to delay the Germans long enough to eek out a win.

I recommend a playing if you enjoy set-piece urban mayhem!

2019-09-03(D) Martí Cabré vs Fermín Retamero German winEither my setup was a disaster or the German plan was outstanding or the dice were abysmal, I don't know, but at the end of Turn 1 the German player had taken half my VP buildings and broken two thirds of my units on the map. With reinforcements due on Russian turn 3, the German by then would have taken the whole map, so I conceded on Turn 1. How it went? First he put smoke where he wanted and then the rest of his tanks advanced without problems, my guns failed all the shots and then were KIA'd by CH on AFPh. He stepped on ALL my mines and even exit those hexes with only a couple of units broken. Then all these advanced units made my broken units fail my routs and I had nothing else to defend with. Ugh.
2018-08-15(A) jon smith vs Neil Brunger German winRussians foritified the centre building and packed it with MMC, mines covered the north Russian buildings.

Germans pushed the 50mm pzrIII through the track in the woods, creating a trail break for minefields and the inf piled in behind it spreading out through the woods, smoke and firepower contained the Russians in the buildings and the 80mm OBA was called in on the main building on the south edge pummelling defenders in there all game.

Russians called in arty into the western push but failed to maintain radio contact and so were unable to move it about.

After a devastating ROF tear from Hipped HMG and 9-2 leader at adjacent units in central bulidings the germans pushed armour into the hex and the inf encircled the Russians in there capturing them all.

With beserk units, both 152mm breaking their guns and Russian snipers running amoke there was still nothing the Russians could do to prevent the germans taking 5 buildings and the tower with 2 turns to go, and with only 5-6 MMC left with germans having lost 5mmc all game the Russians surrendered.
2017-03-18(D) Jason Wert vs Michael Daschbach Russian winUnbelievably great game with tense action all the way around. Last couple turns were back and forth and ultimately it all came down to the tower. Russians win on lucky PTC to prevent capture of the tower.

Battle Setting (view)Panzer2009-01-22 22:12:06
This Scenario takes place in Russia during German operation Citadel. The Russians found themselves committing forces that they had planned to use for a counter-offensive once the German spearheads ran out of punch. The fighting in Ponyri was especially vicious, and has been compared to Stalingrad by historians on both sides. Both the Germans and the Russians continued to throw forces into the battle for this tractor station over the course of several days. Due to combat losses and the defensive strength of the new German Panther and Tiger tanks, the Russians found themselves using their large caliber assault guns as anti-tank artillery.
