The recent German offensive in southern Tunisia had initial success at Kasserine Pass but was finally halted by Allied reinforcements that had been rushed to the area. General Hans-Jurgen von Arnim, commander of 5. Panzer-Armee, decided to go on the offensive in northern Tunisia. Von Arnim felt the shift of Allied forces to the Kasserine Pass area had left the northern part of the Allied line weaker, and he wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. He organized two separate operations, Operation OCHSENKOPF (OXHEAD) and Operation AUSLADUNG (UNLOADING). The latter was to be carried out by Division von Manteuffel, with its attack directed towards Sedjenane and Djebel Abiod.
