Overview:

On April 12 STAVKA declared Vienna clear of German forces. The 3rd Ukrainian Front was issued new orders, one of which was to take the town of St. Polten, south-west of Vienna, in the strategically located Vienna Woods. St. Polten was taken on the 16th, but the attempt to clear the Vienna Woods of the defending Germans turned into a sersies of see-saw battles for the hills which dominated the region.

2024-02-04(D) Brian Lazewski vs Jeffrey Malter Russian winSS strategy was to come on and hammer a hole with death stacks and flood up the hill.

This seems like a good balanced scenario with some seesaw action. I think the key for the Germans is deploying the max (4 half squads) then attempting more deployments after setup in the Rally Phase. I think with 8 half squad SS (which are not bad) to rush on the board bump stripping. Then flood the fire-groups on with the 10-2 death stack. If the Germans, on Turn 2 can rush the trenches and clear them by turn 3 it'll be a match. At the very least the Germans need a strong foothold in the trenches otherwise they'll have a near impossible time winning by T6

I think if the Russians setup in force in the trenches they'll be in trouble. I think the Russians need to setup far forward. Some of the Russian initial force was preserved and rallied back into the fight, which was a bonus. In the end time (as always) became the enemy of the attacker in this one.

Chris' SS made good progress and captured two trenches
on the German right before the cavalry arrived.

As others have said, the Germans need to get a trench on
both ends of the trench line. Otherwise, it's a tough time for
them.

A _bit_ static for the Russian, but only for three turns.

Well worth a playing.

2022-10-15(D) David Ramsey vs Daniel Takai Russian winA really tough turn 1 and 2 for the Germans allowed my Russian defenders to pull back a hex or two, meaning that by the time the reinforcements arrived I still controlled two of the trench hexes on the Russian right. This meant that the Germans were challenged to take the hexes from the oncoming 458s who had climbed up the hill.

Russians had good dice, and the balance (which didn't affect the game as the SU-76s didn't fire a shot) before the Germans called it on turn 4.

Tough for the Germans if they can't get all of the trenches - or at least both flank hexes before the Russians arrive in force.
