Overview:

In early spring 1943, the Allies were preparing to eliminate the Axis bridgehead in Tunisia. A first offensive launched in mid-April ended in semi-failure and the Allies regrouped to launch the subsequent Operation Strike. It began on 4th May and quickly met with success. On the 7th, the British entered Tunis, whilst the GI’s and French troops from the Army of Africa reaching Bizerte, but elsewhere the battle continued. The French Army Corps (CAF) had as its goal to secure the Zaghouan massif south of Tunis. If the French had been initially been using pre-Armistice equipment, they had now been substantially re-armed with materiel from their Allies, Thompson submachine guns and Boys ATR’s for the riflemen and Valentine tanks for the 5th Regiment du Chasseurs d’Afrique. In addition, they also benefited from Anglo-American artillery support. Their adversaries, the grenadiers of the Hermann Goering Division, were very well equipped with guns and anti-tank weapons, but after a week of fighting, the CAF was at the foot of the Bled el-Tella, the last remaining enemy post.
