Overview:

The 29th Infantry Division received ordered to halt offensive operations for several days, surprising the division commander, who was eager to make a push for St. Lô . The 2nd Battalion, 115th Regiment was designated as the division reserve and was ordered to relieve 2nd Battalion, 116th Regiment in Saint-Claire. They expected as easy day, but things don’t always go as planned. When Company E approached Saint-Claire, they came under intense small arms fire. A failure had occurred in the battlefield handoff; 2-116th departed prior to anyone arriving to conduct a proper relief in place. German paratroopers had seized the opportunity and occupied the village.

2025-01-27(D) Peter Palmer vs John Knowles American winI ran out of bodies, and John had 13 buildings although he was struggling himself with casualties.
2017-12-30(A) Andy Goldin vs Peter Courtney American winPeter and I had fun playing this scenario. Peter defended as the Germans while I played the attacking Americans.

Admittedly I had some pretty hot dice initially, which helped me get a toehold in the town. By the end of turn 3 I had captured the outlying buildings, made my way across the street and started to make contact with his main line for the cost of a wounded 8-1 and a broken half squad. At that time my reinforcements entered on the other side of town and got themselves in position to apply pressure. Now his kill stack (2x 5-4-8s, LMG and 9-1) got busy, breaking one of my squads. Returning fire simply battle hardened his 9-1 to a 9-2! His para squad on the flank succeeded at driving out a 5-4-6 from one of the buildings near his main line.

Even so, the noose was starting to tighten as I got my firepower in position. In my Turn 4 Prep Fire I managed to get encircling fire on his kill stack located in the upper level of the chapel. The decisive blow was the third part of the encirclement firing the fire group containing the M2 HB 50 cal with the MMG, and two full strength squads. Although it was "only" an NMC, his leader was pinned and both squads failed morale checks at their new, lower, morale. Peter didn't take the bait I offered by moving squads around either flank of his supporting position and instead laid down fire on the squad I ran into the building to flush-out the kill stack which I now had "treed". Although the first US squad failed a PTC, I pushed in a second, thereby ensuring a favorable outcome for either a rout-phase surrender or CC. The rout-phase surrender of the Paras in the chapel and the CC elimination of his best leader left Peter with 3 1/2 squads and a leader. However, with more buildings in American hands than he could conceivably take back in the time remaining, he conceded and St. Claire was liberated.

In hindsight Peter was right to set up in the main part of the town, its just that he set up too far back and allowed me to get across the street almost for free. I probably should have been more aggressive but you gotta make a lot of tough calls when all your opponent's units start HIP! The scenario has some decent re-playability and worth playing again as the other side.
2014-01-09(D) Paolo Cariolato vs Federico Corso German win
2013-08-30(D) Paolo Cariolato vs ChrisH German winNice little infantry scenario. The bocage area is critical for the German defence, the American should try to outflank it with every means.
2012-10-05(D) Fred Ingram vs Dan Stanhagen American winAlthough I started HIP, the Americans can easily pick off any revealed unit one by one (using deployed squads and massed advance phase firepower). I was just lucky to 50 cal broke and then disabled early
