Overview:
The Chinese Civil War was suspended as KMT and CCP forces agreed to work together to fight the Japanese. The New Fourth army was formed in 1937 in southern China from Communists fighting there. In the fall of 1940, the New Fourth Army launched an offensive against Nationalist (KMT) forces. The offensive caused tremendous casualties to KMT forces. The KMT decided to take an offensive action of their own, which would later be called the Wannan Incident, and on 5 January surrounded the New Fourth Army with 80,000 troops. On 7 January, the KMT 144th Division attacked the Communists in the mountainous terrain and valleys near Maolin.
