Overview:

Once the Landwehr Kanalline had been breached the next assignment for The 9th Rifle Corps was to capture the Anhalter Railway Station. Moving up Saarlandstrasse the first echelon encountered stiff German resistance coming from the fortified Cristus Church and the nearby post office. As these positions were being reduced the 11th SS Panzer Grenadier Division launched a counter attack supported by some of the last running King Tiger tanks in Berlin. Supported by the 92nd Guards Tank Regiment the Soviet troops were able to defeat the counter attack. The German tanks crawled back into the rubble and the 9th Corps reached the station.
Attacker: Russian (Elements of 9th Rifle Corps)

I kinda liked this scenario. Jack and Marty played the Russians and Jack was far too conservative in the opening turns, meaning that my hold on the station was unshakable. Marty, who holds a bias against Squads and Leaders, thought this was just another city slugfest. However, there IS room for some maneuver, whether the Soviets want to bullrush the middle or make an end-run blitz on the Soviet right. What makes this scenario interesting? The Konigstiger. Hidden panzerfausts. A variety of squad types for the Germans. For the Russians, there are LOTS of SW. In fact, probably too many to carry, it's verging on ridiculous. What makes this a bad scenario? The multitude of goofy CH BFTR rules. I HATE road-building hexes. Partially destroyed/collapsed/burnt out buildings? Fahgetaboutit. My advice, come to an agreement about which ones you are going to use and eliminate as many as possible. I suppose if you played an entire campaign game, but for a six turn scenario the rules create more exceptions and less rules. It's not fun. It's easy enough if you are playing at the fast-and-loose Boulder Friday night club, but I wouldn't want to play this one with a rules lawyer or at a tournament. Would I play this one again? Probably. I gave up the balance as the Germans, mostly in order to keep Marty from whining (it didn't work) but it isn't necessarily unbalanced. Had Jack been more aggressive early, he would have laid down some brutal fire on the station as early as turn 3. As it was, he was conservative early on and was forced into some bad choices at end game.
