Overview:
Essential to any continuing advance eastward to destroy Army Group North, the Russians were determined to crush the Germans prior to the spring thaw occurring and turning low ground into an impassable mire. Further complicating the situation was Hitler’s refusal to allow a breakout, instead awaiting a relief force attacking from Staraya Russa to the west.
