Overview:
The British launched Operation Ironclad on 5 May in order to prevent the Japanese from using Madagascar as a submarine base. They landed on the Vichy French occupied island, and surprisingly met little to no resistance. Further inland, however, the French resolve stiffened. The 2nd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, now 6 or 7 miles inland, came under fire as they approached Col de Bonne Nouvelle. The Fusiliers found the Vichy French defending a rocky hill fortified with trenches, pillboxes, and wire, as well as artillery pieces that guarded the gateway to the port of Antsiranana (Diego Surez).Attacker: British (Reinforced 2nd Royal Welsh Fusiliers)
