Overview:

The Australians had decided to evacuate a small force lodged on the northwest coast a day earlier. The Japanese prepared for the final push using troops brought across from Buka Island. Throughout the night, the Australians could hear motor vehicles moving men and supplies up for the battle. As day dawned, the Australian artillery began firing off the last of its ammunition, while Corsairs from the Royal New Zealand Air Force, guided by an Australian spotter aircraft, began pounding the Japanese with aerial depth charges, usually reserved for use against Japanese submarines. Despite the pounding, the Japanese launched fresh troops into the battle.
