Overview:

The Australian 2/27th Battalion was pushing into the formidable Finisterre Mountains from the Ramu Valley. The Japanese held the high ground, notably the daunting feature known as Shaggy Ridge, named after an Australian soldier. Moving onto a ridge in the shadow of the mountain, the Australians found themselves astride the Japanese line of supply. A forward Aussie platoon surprised and routed a group of unsuspecting Japanese soldiers on a knoll, the cry going up: "here they are boys - hop in for your bloody chop!" The business of killing done with, the diggers settled in for the night, the Australians occupying Japanese fighting pits and slit trenches on what would become known as John's Knoll. At the same time, the better part of a Japanese battalion was moving toward the scene of the ambush, with orders to throw the Australians off the ridge, and restore the supply line.
