The 153rd Parachute Battalion, 50th Parachute Brigade, was the only Gurkha airborne unit formed during the war. Their initial combat experience occurred as part of a delaying action against the northern pincer of the Japanese envelopment of Imphal, india. Along with its sister airborne battalions, the Gurkhas were deployed to the vicinity of Sangshak village where it faced the experience Japanese 58th Infantry Regiment as it sought to transit this location. The Indians from 152nd Battalion were the initial airborne unit deployed to Sangshak to meet the Japanese threat. After a seven day battle the Indians were pushed back. The Gurkhas from the 153rd were ordered to retake the village.

2025-05-30(A) David Garvin vs Herbert Heyman Japanese winAs part of FNF. My Japanese pressed hard to get the church and whatever else they could to start. In the end, it was enough. Barely. Final CC roll needed 6 or fewer for me to win, otherwise, he wins. My roll? 1, 1! This game was a razor's edge of fun!
2025-05-30(A) Paul Legg vs Peter Palmer Gurkhas winFriday Night Fight

2025-04-28(A) Eric Partizan Eric vs Toni Carbonie Gurkhas winMADASL X 2025 Madrid
2025-04-21(A) Doug Bleyaert vs Mike Nicely Gurkhas winScenario went to the last close combat dice roll with the Gurkas hanging on to a victory,
2024-07-15(D) Douglas Leslie vs Marc Hanna Gurkhas winHad a blast playing this scenario. The Gurkha heavy weapons were unscathed during the initial Japanese attack but didn't contribute much in the battle that followed. In the end, it came down to an assault on one victory building which only one 648 survived long enough to enter CC against one and a half Japanese squads, both of which were pinned. It all came down to the final CC DR. The Gurkhas needed to kill the Japanese defenders in hand to hand combat at 1 to 1 odds and then survive a 1-4 attack in return. On this occasion, the dice gods were with me and I pulled of the win...just. Great scenario and it is easy to see why it has achieved "classic" status
2024-03-15(D) Kermit Mullins vs James Treu Japanese winMarch Madness 2024 Round 2.
2024-03-15(A) Dave Mareske vs Richard Burton Japanese winMarch Madness Round 2
2024-03-10(D) Vic Lauterbach vs JM Japanese winI got the Indian/Gurkha airborne in this one and set up to face an attack through the kunai around 42O2. I never found a good position for the MMOR but the ATG pounded 42oI3 and J1. Jim's first banzai went well for me as 2 mutual eliminations out of 3 melees allowed me to reoccupy 42J3 and 42oI3. Two costly Casualty MCs weakened my first counterattack to retake 50G10 and 42oG1 on Jim's right flank. It failed and left me with one GO 458 in 42F3. My last counterattack sparked a desperate HtH Melee in 42J1 that left Jim controlling the empty building. Overall, this one deserves its reputation as a classic. We both attacked and defended and were convinced our losses made our force too weak to win! Jim: Rough start for my "Furious" soldiers who took two CR results from 447 FF getting into position to Banzai, but that charge took the church. The heavy cost (2 MMC and my 8-1 in exchange for Vic's 8-0 and a 447) left me weak. Vic quickly knocked my 237 out of the church, so I hunkered down to hold 42G1 and J1. It came down to HtH CC mutual elimination in J1. What more could I ask? When the Japanese get to move around, they're fun to play! This very good scenario slightly favors the British; give the Japanese player the balance.
2023-06-27(D) Mark Thompson vs Chip Wertenberger (Japanese) Gurkhas winIntense brawl that included two successful Banzai Charges in turn 1 that resulted in Japanese Control of the church/required victory buildings and very bloody H-t-H CC lead by the Gurkhas that turned them out in turn 4. A critical (if only) contribution of the 76mm was an effective WP screen that allowed the Gurkhas to rapidly close and unleash devastating AFPh. A superhuman Japanese crew in the steeple made things interesting, but the Gurkhas' leadership and prowess in CC prevailed in every CC that followed. Fun scenario with many permutations possible for both sides. Highly recommended.
2022-04-23(D) Shane Pask vs Jamie Westlake Japanese winANZACON. Jamie started with a Banzai charge with everything. The Stokes MTR immediately malfed and the 57 ran out of HE. I had to abandon the church on the first turn but the displaced defenders created a hero when my 8-1 leader was wounded. (The hero was immediately wounded and the wounded 8-1 killed). The Japs malfed most of their MG but repaired 2 LMG on T5 in time to create a meat wall to prevent me reaching any of the buildings I needed to recover.
2021-11-06(D) Neal Ulen vs Scott Rowland Gurkhas winIf the Gurkha get rolling it's hard to stop them, and if the British can keep the Japanese from crossing the clearing to the other side of the village to capture huts, they have a good chance. Gurkha's should engage in CC as much as possible, and invoke HtH if they get an ambush. It's a quick way to take care of those pesky Japanese who just never back down.
2021-07-19(A) Dave Mareske vs Dennis Dowd Japanese winWe tried this one again. Dennis set up the Allied forces further back and giving up the church saving his forces for the counterattack. I was overly aggressive with the Japanese thinking they would simply stripe and then get into CC, but many of them were out right KIAed. Still, as the Allies tried to counter attack the Japanese returned the favor of breaking squads and they were able to narrowly hold on to two of the huts near the church. A very close game.
2021-07-12(A) Dave Mareske vs Dennis Dowd Japanese winFirst playing of this fine scenario. Dennis set up his forces too forward and were overwhelmed with SMOKE and WP allowing the Japanese to take the buildings and cross the open ground settling themselves in the huts and already dug foxholes. Victory for the Japanese called early.
2021-06-21(D) Jeff Wright vs Stu Rubin Gurkhas win
2021-04-22(D) X von Marwitz vs Lars-Peder Jensen Gurkhas winJust completed this fine small PTO action which I can readily recommend to play. The the Japanese basically overrun a village and be done with it when Gurkha reinforcements appear on the scene who have to take it back. So both sides will have to attack and to defend in this one.

2021-01-17(D) wayne baumber vs Joel Gurkhas winGood solid PTO fayre, the HIP 6 pdr did very well in breaking up the initial Japanese attack. Although the church finally fell to the Japanese the Gurhka counter attack was far to strong and ended up being a fairly comfortable win.
2020-11-22(D) Larry Rohlfing vs Tom Repetti Gurkhas win
2020-11-21(D) Michael Rodgers vs Paul Lauger Japanese winAt-start Brits took a lot of casualties for little gain. Japanese had six building hexes. Ghurkas could not take back enough to win.
2020-04-29(A) Jason Wert vs JR Tracy Gurkhas win
2020-02-20(A) Raoul Duke vs MB Japanese winA PTO classic. An initial Banzai charge supported by mortar fire got the Japanese into the objective area in short order. Then the Gurkhas showed up and the Japanese had to hold on for dear life in three turns of house to house fighting. When the dust finally settled, the Japanese won, but the issue had been in doubt throughout the last CCPh.
2018-12-10(A) David Shannon vs Joe Moro Japanese winA fine scenario. Opted for a conservative attack with the Japanese and didn't Banzai on first turn. Still managed to reach the critical church VC building in short order and held the village with enough forces for the inevitable strong Gurkha counter attack.
2016-10-07(A) Michael Rodgers vs Jeff Wasserman Gurkhas winMy early Banzai got troops into the valuable church, but I over committed the follow-on troops to the CC attacks. The British ATG and MTR took their toll. The British reinforcements eventually pushed my Japanese back out of the church.
2016-08-13(A) Gordon Jupp vs Derek Cox Gurkhas winGreat little scenario. An inauspicious start, no smoke or WP and a broken mortar in the turn 1 prep was followed by a pretty good banzai BUT I couldn't get any ambushes and in the resulting HtH Derek consistently took my attackers out...I had captured the church by turn 2 but my losses were crippling and I couldn't keep the Gurkhas out, good fun tho!

2014-03-15(A) Russell Dewhurst vs Jim F Japanese winGurkhas resigned after turn 1 Banzai charge
2014-03-15(A) Russell Dewhurst vs Jim F Japanese winI took the village by turn 2 cutting off the routing units thus eliminating all but the guns. The Gurkha reinforcements made more progress, slowed down a little on turn 3, but had a good last two turns' attack-- they didn't take enough buildings back from me mainly because they kept failing PTCs on the last turn. Good scenario in which both sides get to attack, Japanese get to try banzais, and good practice with PTO terrain.

2013-10-10(A) Don Lazov vs Jim Wiseman Japanese winThis was for the PTO Mini. Fun scenario.
2013-03-12(A) John Van Natta vs Jerry Japanese winThis is a good little scenario that can be played fairly quickly. Pulled off the win in my first PTO scenario in a year or more.
